SchUM Artist-in-Residence
It all began in 2022 with three international artists visiting the SchUM cities of Speyer, Worms, and Mainz. They spent six weeks working on projects that explore the history and cultural heritage of Central European Jewry. Learn more here about the SchUM Artists in Residence from 2026.
SchUM Artist-in-Residence 2026
The eagerly awaited international fellows—Roy Efrat, Atalya Laufer, and Raphaël Fischer-Dieskau—for this year’s SchUM Artist-in-Residence program arrived in Speyer, Worms, and Mainz and began their respective residencies. From late April through late May 2026, they engaged artistically with the history and culture of the SchUM congregations while on site.

"THREE INSIGHTS INTO SHUM" on SchUM Artists in Residence
In 2022, the SchUM cities launched their first joint artist-in-residence program. International artists were invited to engage with the rich tradition of the SchUM Jewish Community Federation during a six-week residency.
A distinguished jury ultimately selected Avery Gosfield from Italy, who created compositions based on Jewish textual and musical traditions from the Middle Ages, as well as Katya Oicherman, from the U.S., who illustrated Juspa Schammes’s Worms “Minhagbuch” with hand embroidery, and Germán Morales from Argentina, who documented the architectural heritage of the three cities through drawings and photographs.
The camera team from Visualkey Filmproduktion Mainz documented the scholarship recipients’ work. The documentary film “THREE INSIGHTS INTO SHUM” clearly highlights just how much the medieval SchUM sites—with their synagogues, mikvaot, Talmud schools, and cemeteries—still fascinate artists worldwide today.
