"THREE INSIGHTS INTO SHUM" about SchUM Artists in Residence
In 2022, the ShUM cities implemented a joint Artist in Residence program for the first time. International artists were invited to spend six weeks working on the rich tradition of the Jewish community of ShUM.
A distinguished jury ultimately selected Avery Gosfield from Italy, who created compositions based on Jewish textual and musical traditions from the Middle Ages, as well as Katya Oicherman, USA, who illustrated Juspa Schammes' Worms "Minhagbuch" with hand embroidery, and Germán Morales from Argentina, who captured the architectural heritage of the three cities in drawings and photos.
The camera team from Visualkey Filmproduktion Mainz accompanied the scholarship holders in their work. The documentary film "THREE INSIGHTS INTO SHUM" clearly shows how much the medieval SchUM sites with their synagogues, mikvahs, Talmud schools, and cemeteries still fascinate artists worldwide today.
