Wine and the City

Indoor market breakfast in the hotel lobby: a winemaker from Mainz offers his wines, accompanied by delicious snacks and trendy lounge music playing in the background. Relaxed as if at a private party, hotel guests and residents of Mainz city center stand and sit together and enjoy the wines. Hotel manager Holger Hanselmann mingles with the guests and is not a manager in the traditional sense: in his jeans outfit, he could just as easily be one of the guests. "Our lobby is furnished more like a living room and is the central location for our regular events with Mainz's local heroes – 'local heroes' are regular guests here!" explains the native Swabian, who has been managing the lifestyle boutique hotel since the opening of the me and all hotels in Mainz.

No wonder that Great Wine Capital has awarded the Best of Wine Tourism Award 2021 to this innovative hotel in the city with its concept of opening up to local wine producers.

Cozy sofas, a propeller plane and much more can be found in the lobby

"The wishes of business travelers and tourist guests have changed—they want to experience the city they are staying in at their hotel as well," says the hotel manager, speaking from experience. This starts at the bar: the drinks menu features products from Mainz and the surrounding area—this applies to wine, beer, and soft drinks. Wherever possible, the food for the snacks also comes from the region.

The trendy city bike is in the room, a propeller model airplane hangs from the ceiling, and the eye is drawn to cozy sofas with snuggly pillows: the hotel lobby with its wooden floor conveys a homely feel-good atmosphere – which fits perfectly with the Rhine-Hessian way of life. During the day, guests use the lobby for chats or meetings over small meals and Mainz wines – in the evening, there are atmospheric events such as living room concerts, readings, talent slams, creative workshops – or a DJ plays music. On some Sundays, there is live music at lunchtime and the lobby is full – everything is very relaxed and very personal.

Wine is a recurring theme throughout the hotel – something that hotel manager Holger Hanselmann is very familiar with, as his parents were active members of the winegrowers' association. Vine motifs are part of the hotel's design: the room numbers are backed by vine motifs, and pictures of wine festivals hang in the elevator and corridors.

What I particularly like is that the information for guests in the room, the so-called "Guest Directory," is printed on a wine bottle label, which guests can keep as a gift. "You can't get more wine than that!" says Holger Hanselmann, referring to the extensive local wine list in the restaurant. The hotel purchases the wines in collaboration with the Mainz Winegrowers' Association. A sommelier tastes them and selects the best ones.

The open restaurant concept suits the hotel: external providers take turns offering different cuisines. The range is exciting: sometimes there are homemade fries in all variations (even with truffles!), sometimes dishes from Israel are offered, or guests are surprised with Japanese ramen cuisine. The diverse Mainz Local Hero wines are always the perfect accompaniment. And Corona? Even in difficult times, the management finds the right answers: ten hotel rooms have been cleared out and converted into restaurant séparés. The kitchen serves wine and food here for private dinners with reduced contact – an offer that has been very well received.

A bicycle stands in front of a wall with "Before I die" phrases

A relaxed lifestyle in a casual, creative environment: guests write down things they want to do before they die on a blackboard using chalk. One entry reads: "Before I die, I want to make my own wine!" I like that!
