Animal shelter and city continue to exchange ideas
After some confusion in public perception, the board of the Mainz Animal Welfare Association, Lord Mayor Nino Haase and Janina Steinkrüger, Head of the Environment Department, met again to discuss the future of the animal shelter.
The City of Mainz fully supports the animal welfare association in optimizing the temporary solution and finding a permanent location, always with the goal of ensuring the best possible care for the animals.
It is clear that splitting operations across two locations can only be a temporary solution. As has always been communicated, this is intended to be limited to the period during the bridge demolition. To make this interim period as smooth as possible, we will maintain close communication, as we have done over the past 3.5 years of planning, and will continue to work on improving the housing for all animals. Animal welfare standards have been and will continue to be strictly adhered to in all planning, which was ensured by the early involvement of a specialist planner. At the same time, the City of Mainz is making significant investments in more modern office and enclosure modules. Since these are mobile structures, they can be used not only during the transition but also at the final location.
We thank the association and all volunteers for their valuable work and want to assure you that we intend to navigate this undoubtedly difficult time together as strong partners.
