Heilig Geist - Recreation for all the senses!
Note: An article from mainzMAGAZIN Fall/Winter 2004
The Heilig Geist restaurant is located within the historic walls of a medieval hospital. Behind the imposing entrance portal, which guests pass through upon entering, a breathtaking backdrop opens up with Gothic pointed arches, columns, white walls, and wooden floors. The imposing twelve-meter-high (!) cross vault gives afternoon coffee or a festive meal a very special ambience and exudes an almost sacred atmosphere.
The building was constructed in 1236 and is one of the oldest hospital buildings in Europe. Originally a place for caring for the elderly and sick, it was converted into a retirement home around 1400. In the 19th century, the "Heiliggeist Spital" was temporarily used as a correctional facility for girls and young women before being converted into a restaurant in 1863. Despite a complete renovation in 1999, the listed building has retained its unique charm of bygone times.
One half is a mixture of knightly ambience and modern gastronomy, while the other half of the venerable sandstone building, with its smaller tables and seating, has been given a contemporary café character.
In the evening, the "Heilig Geist" becomes a meeting place for night owls and lovers of a sophisticated bar atmosphere. During the summer months, a beer garden offers around 150 visitors a cozy outdoor spot until midnight.
The culinary offerings range from brunch on weekends and holidays to international cuisine and homemade cakes and pies. Incidentally, the lemonade is a special house recipe.
