More green instead of gray: The state capital of Mainz is participating in the nationwide "abpflastern" (unpaving) competition. From March 21 to October 31, 2026, every area that is freed from paving or concrete counts.
The competition was launched by students at the University of Applied Sciences Koblenz. Cities collect points for every square meter of sealed surface that is removed.
Who can participate: Citizens, companies, associations, initiatives
Suitable areas: Front yards, courtyards, driveways, parking lots, schoolyards
Not permitted: Fire department access routes and emergency routes

Important: Only those who are authorized to make changes to the area may participate. The city accepts no liability for damage.
The City of Mainz plans to submit the following projects to the competition (subject to budget approval):

Altenauergasse / corner of Hintere Christofsgasse
Balthasar-Maler-Platz
Holzhofstraße / corner of Schönbornstraße
Barbarossaring
Neubrunnenstrasse
A prerequisite for the start of construction is the approval of the city budget by the Supervisory and Services Directorate (ADD).
