Find out more about the current status of municipal heat planning in Mainz.

April 2026

Participation in the municipal heating plan has been completed.

From March 2 to April 1, 2026, you had the opportunity to submit comments and feedback on the draft Municipal Heat Plan. Thank you very much for your feedback!

All comments received will now be reviewed, sorted by topic, and evaluated by experts. We will provide an update here as soon as the evaluation is complete:

March 2026

The second public forum took place on March 11, 2026, at the Rheingoldhalle. The draft of Mainz’s heating plan was presented to the public.

October 2025

  • On October 2, 2025, a public forum on municipal heat planning took place.

July to November 2025

  • Development of target scenarios for the years 2035 and 2045.

  • Individual areas in Mainz are divided into
      • heat network areas,
      • decentralized supply areas, and
      • test areas (taking various framework conditions into account).

  • The aim is to identify realistic and sustainable options for these heat supply areas in order to make the heat supply in Mainz future-proof, environmentally friendly, and economical.

  • This will be followed by the creation of an implementation plan to realize the selected scenario in the respective areas.

  • The implementation plan is intended to provide the greatest possible planning security for all citizens, companies, and stakeholders through project-related measures.

March to June 2025

  • Identification and analysis of options for climate-friendly heat supply in the Mainz urban area, including an examination of the potential offered by geothermal energy, solar thermal energy, wastewater heat, ambient heat, and unavoidable waste heat (e.g., from industry).

  • Development of a communication strategy aimed at providing all stakeholders, and especially citizens, with sufficient and target-group-oriented information.

  • Presentation of the participation concepts to the Advisory Board for Citizen Participation, integration, and inclusion in Mainz’s list of projects for citizen participation.

January to March 2025

  • Data collection, review of existing concepts (e.g., Heat Master Plan 2.0 (opens in a new tab)), analysis of the current heat supply situation in the Mainz urban area.

  • The result is a cartographic representation of the findings (e.g., the current heating requirements of buildings).

  • Creation of a participation concept for three target groups (specialist actors, local advisory councils, and the general public).


December 2024

  • Start of municipal heat planning.

  • Selection of external specialist agencies to support the development, formation of a project group with individuals from various municipal departments and representatives of the municipal utilities.
