This extends the existing regulation to another district. The expanded provisions also remain in effect in Mainz-Gonsenheim and Mainz-Hechtsheim, as well as in the Old Town and the New Town. New general orders will push back the start of quiet hours on Fridays, Saturdays, and the days before public holidays by two hours to midnight. The regulations will be in effect from August 1, 2026, through October 31, 2026.

“With these extended outdoor dining hours, we aim to support the vibrant dining culture in our neighborhoods while ensuring a fair balance between restaurants, guests, and residents. It is crucial that these expanded opportunities are used responsibly and that the protection of the neighborhood remains guaranteed. This has been well received—and now the Laubenheim neighborhood is also following suit with extended operating hours,” says Mayor Nino Haase. 

This measure guarantees significant added value for both residents and the restaurant industry, according to Haase: “On hot days, it allows people to stay outdoors even in the late evening hours when temperatures are more pleasant. At the same time, it gives restaurants the opportunity to use their outdoor areas for longer.” 

The general orders apply to restaurants and bars with approved outdoor dining in the districts of Mainz-Laubenheim, Mainz-Gonsenheim, Mainz-Hechtsheim, Altstadt, and Neustadt. The extension applies exclusively to the days mentioned and is contingent upon compliance with the applicable noise control regulations.

Clear requirements continue to apply to these establishments: Permissible noise limits must be observed, appropriate self-monitoring measures must be implemented, and residents must be guaranteed sufficient nighttime rest. Outdoor musical performances, as well as the transmission of music or television broadcasts from indoor areas to the outdoors, are not permitted after 10:00 p.m. Windows and doors of restaurants must remain closed from that time onward. In the event of repeated violations, the general order may be revoked or restricted for individual establishments.

Individual exemptions that have already been granted remain in effect, provided they contain more favorable provisions. Furthermore, the general orders do not replace any other required permits, such as those under building codes or special-use regulations.

Background: 

The city of Mainz had already introduced a similar regulation for the first time in the summer of 2025 and initially tested it for a limited period of just over three months. The goal was to accommodate changes in leisure habits, the increasingly warm evening hours, and the economic situation of restaurants and bars. The measure, which has now been extended, builds on the positive response from residents and restaurant and bar operators.

The expansion to additional neighborhoods became possible after the City of Mainz extended the regulation to include districts outside the city center. In Gonsenheim and Hechtsheim, the local advisory councils had approved the introduction of the measure. With the inclusion of Mainz-Laubenheim, another neighborhood has now been added.
