More protection for our native hedgehogs

The population of the Western European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) has declined sharply in recent years. Since April 4, 2025, the general decree prohibiting the night-time operation of mowing robots in the area of the state capital Mainz has been in force.

Due to the impoverishment of the landscape caused by the intensification of agriculture and forestry, it is not possible to develop and maintain a small-scale and varied cultural landscape in which hedgehogs can find sufficient food and suitable hiding places. The use of pesticides significantly reduces the hedgehog's hunting success, as insects are its main source of food. The lack of natural refuges under hedges and copses also has a negative impact on hedgehog populations. The consequences of climate change and the associated drought summers make it even more difficult for hedgehogs to survive in rural areas.

In urban areas, hedgehogs have been able to find a replacement habitat in nature-oriented parks and gardens, which offer them a sufficiently good basis for life. Although hedgehog populations have also declined in cities, it has been shown that population densities are higher in urban areas than in rural areas. Urban habitats therefore serve as important refuges for hedgehogs. Nevertheless, there are also numerous dangers here to which hedgehogs are defenselessly exposed.

Properly supporting hedgehogs - species protection in your own garden

Gardens are important substitute habitats for hedgehogs in cities. Anyone can make a valuable contribution to protecting hedgehogs with just a few simple measures. These measures also benefit other wild animals.

You can make your garden hedgehog-friendly by planting native plants and shrubs and piling up leaves, which hedgehogs can use as potential sleeping or nesting places. You can also improve the living conditions for hedgehogs on your balcony by planting native perennials and herbs. Numerous insects can feed on the plants, which in turn improves the food supply for hedgehogs.
