Winery Wasem Doppelstück: Sister Act
Done: Marie and Julia Wasem are relieved! The 2023 grape harvest was not easy, but now the grape must from over 20 hectares of vineyards is fermenting in stainless steel tanks and wooden barrels! Thanks to careful, selective harvesting, it is sure to be a good wine. The hustle and bustle and the smells of the grape harvest, which hang over Rheinhessen like a harvest veil, can also be felt by guests in both houses of the wine hotel. The main house is part of the Wasem Doppelstück winery – the historic ensemble is reminiscent of a vacation on a wine farm. Guests have been able to stay here in the center of Ingelheim since 2002, and the family lovingly restored the hotel in 2018 as part of the reestablishment of the winery.
2019: A new beginning! Supported by their parents Burkhard and Ilona and their grandmother Magda, the sisters, aged just 20 and 24, founded the Wasem Doppelstück company – a bold move! A functional division of labor: Marie, the older sister, takes over the business management and sales, while Julia, who studied oenology, is the winemaker. They purposefully formulate clear common goals: they focus on "quality, femininity, craftsmanship, and sustainability."
The careful use of natural resources is a matter close to Julia's heart – in 2022, the motto will be: "We are organic!" The transition to organic viticulture will be complete after just three years. The wines focus on Burgundy varieties. The vineyards around Ingelheim are particularly suitable for Pinot Noir – the red wines from this grape variety are also of select quality at the Wasem Doppelstück winery. In addition to Riesling, the eye-catching label with the large W is found primarily on Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay wine bottles.
The newly designed hotel extension, just a few houses away from the winery, plays on the theme of wine in a modern way: the room numbers are written on wine labels, and the rooms feature wood paneling from original red wine barrels on the walls, creating a cozy atmosphere. The rooms are furnished with custom-made furniture – a high feel-good factor is guaranteed. Wooden benches are available in the garden for relaxation. Mother Ilona manages the wine hotel – Grandma Magda bakes homemade cakes every day, which are served to hotel guests as a welcome gift from the house.
The ideal combination of winery, wine hotel, and event location is perfect for corporate seminars, but also for private celebrations such as bachelor parties, which are becoming increasingly popular. Groups of friends enjoy using the wine bar for a harmonious evening in a small group. For larger parties, rooms such as the barn or the event room are available—even with karaoke equipment.
The "Doppelstück philosophy" in a nutshell: "To make wine accessible to all age groups with a youthful dynamism, creating a personalized program with wonderful moments centered around wine!"
The prize for the Great Wine Capitals Best of Wine Tourism Award 2023 in the "Accommodation" category goes to "Weingut Wasem Doppelstück und Weinhotel." The jury was impressed by the combination of winery and wine hotel, which offers guests a sustainable wine experience.
