The control center is one of the "heart pieces" of the fire department. This is where all emergency calls made to 112 from the city of Mainz and the districts of Mainz-Bingen and Alzey-Worms are received. At one of the six computer-assisted workstations, specially trained professional firefighters receive and dispatch requests for assistance. Depending on the nature of the emergency, the control center staff will dispatch the fire department to the scene in the areas of fire protection and technical assistance. Medical emergencies, such as heart attacks, respiratory distress, or strokes, are also registered here and forwarded to the emergency medical services.

Each year, the Mainz control center receives over 110,000 emergency calls and handles approximately 25,000 emergency medical service calls and calls for fire protection or technical assistance. In addition, there are a large number of calls whose requests for assistance do not trigger the deployment of the fire department or emergency medical services, but require telephone support and mediation by the control center staff. The telephone and computer systems used for this purpose, as well as the radio technology, must be available at all times and are therefore checked and maintained daily. In addition, huge amounts of data must be entered and updated in the control center computers for documentation purposes, for material research in hazardous materials operations, or for the visual representation of locations or routes. Alarms from fire alarm and fault alarm systems or weather and severe weather warnings are also received here. In the event of major incidents, a redundancy control center or an operations command vehicle is put into operation in parallel with the emergency call center, which can also be manned by the control center staff.
